Chandra Detection of Ultra-low Luminosity AGNs in Nearby Quiescent Galaxies
Abstract
Results from a Chandra survey of quiescent galaxies to search for ultra-low luminosity AGNs will be presented. We analyzed nearby (D<15 Mpc) galaxies with no or very weak optical emission lines selected from the Palomer survey. X-ray nuclei are detected in considerable fraction of galaxies in our sample, suggesting that many quiescent galaxies host an ultra-low luminosity AGN with an Eddington ratio lower than 10-8. We measured gas densities at around the Bondi accretion radius and found that accretion luminosities are not simply scaled by the Bondi accretion rate.
